1. STAYING HEALTHY
( a ) KNOW WHY FRUITS AND VEGETABLES SHOULD
ALWAYS BE WASHED BEFORE EATING THEM.
You must always wash fruits and vegetables before
eating them because most farmers put chemicals into the
ground to help their produce grow. They also spray their
crops to remove insects and pests. The insects also leave
germs and sometimes eggs behind, and germs and dust can
be carried onto the crops by the wind. Therefore, we must
wash all fruits and vegetables in order to remove these
chemicals, eggs, germs, dust and dirt before we use them.
( b ) KNOW WHY YOU SHOULD ALWAYS HAVE A BALANCED DIET.
You should have a balanced diet because your body requires food from the
different groups which are:
STAPLES - ground provisions, rice, flour, corn
LEGUMES – peas and beans
FOOD FROM ANIMALS – meat, eggs, milk and milk products
DARK GREEN LEAFY AND YELLOW VEGETABLES – dasheen, spinach, lettuce,
cabbage, pumpkin, carrots, etc.
FRUITS – any fruits
FATS and OILS – margarine, lard, oils, dry coconuts
Find out in which groups your favourite foods are in.
( c ) KNOW WHY REST AND SLEEP ARE NECESSARY FOR YOUR HEALTH.
You should know the importance of having a good night's rest with
sufficient sleep. You must find sometime in each day to have a little
rest. Perhaps after your meals sit down and read a few minutes.
You cannot keep moving and working or playing all day long or
you may wear yourself out.
You must also have a good night sleep. This is the way
the body recharges itself and puts back the energy used up
during the day.
( d ) KNOW ABOUT COLD PREVENTION.
You should be able to explain how to prevent the
spread of colds. The common cold can be caught from other people and you
can pass it on to others. Always cover your nose and mouth with a handkerchief
whenever you cough or sneeze. Colds can also be passed on by drinking from
dirty cups and glasses that have been used by persons having a cold.
