11. HOME SERVICE
As you grow older, you begin to take on more responsibilities at home. You
are learning many skills by participating in the Cub Scout Programme.

( a ) SHOW AKELA THAT YOU ARE ABLE TO TELL THE TIME.
Some of the wrist watches of today are Digital; this means that they show the
time in a window using numbers (digits) such as 10:30am or 3:15pm. These watches
do not have any hands and it is very easy to tell the time by just reading the numbers.
However, most clocks and watches have a dial with numbers from one to
twelve and two hands which rotate to the
right, which is known as Clockwise. Anything
which rotates the other way is known as Anti-
clockwise.
The small hand indicates the hour and

moves around the dial, past all twelve 11 1 11 1 11 1
numbers, every twelve hours. The large hand 10 2 10 2 10 2
indicates the number of minutes past the 9 3 9 3 9 3
hour, and rotates once every hour. 8 4 8 4 8 4
Most of you will be able to tell the time 7 6 5 7 6 5 7 6 5
but Akela and your parents will be able to
teach those who can't.
First clock time 1 o'clock,
When you move up to the Scouts you will

( b ) AS PART OF YOUR HOME ACTIVITIES YOU SHOULD:
1. WASH UP THE DISHES.

2. CLEAN WINDOWS, BRASS OR SILVERWARE.
These two skills you can learn from your parents or guardians, who will be
only too pleased to show you and let you carry out these duties at home.
3. WEED GARDEN BEDS AND WATER THE PLANTS.

Before you begin the first part of the task have someone show you which are
weeds and which are plants. Weeds are wild herbs and other plants growing where
they are not wanted.
When watering plants, do not do so in strong sunlight as the water acts like a
magnifying glass and increases the heat and could burn the plant. Do not
overwater the soil and turn it to mud allowing the plants to fall over.
