Ullman sold and took commissions on silver
items at all their Chinese and Hong Kong stores,
but finding an Ullman piece today is a rare
occurrence.
This piece is known to have been bought at
Ullman, Tientsin. The current owner’s family
owned and ran an oriental rug factory in Tientsin
and the family now reside in the United States.
As China-centric as Jacques Ullman was [we
know he lived in Hong Kong as he appears on
jurors’ registers from 1884 onwards and lived at
41 Wyndham Street], he chose not to
manufacture silver in China or Hong Kong - or at
least as far as we know, for watch cases and
clock parts usually carried Italian or French
silver and gold marks. However, in the absence
of any other silver marks, one can assume this
cup was made in Hong Kong - the mark states
“ULLMAN SILVER”.
The Pottinger Hotel occupies the site at 74 Queen’s Road
today, on the corner of Pottinger Street.

Somewhat incongruously, Ullman
& Co was responsible for the
recording of Chinese opera for
Columbia Records from as early
as 1904 and was certainly still
doing so in 1907.
