Begin with the shape of the skull, and then begin placing guidelines for the features. In a front-facing portrait, the guidelines for the eyes are the horizontal centre of the head and the guideline for the nose is the vertical centre. Once you have the guidelines sketched, guess at the size of the eyes and use a piece of scrap paper to check that they're about an eye's width apart and half an eye's length from either side of the head. Once they eyes are placed, use the length of an eye as a measuring device for placing the other features. The nose ends about an eye length down from the bottom of the eye and the nostrils line up with the inner corners of the eyes. Page 20 of 37
