Lay down the tone in the hair with willow charcoal at first, following the direction of the hair growth, then use the stomp to blend some of the lines together. When there is a clear build-up of contrasts in the midtones, shadows, and highlights on the body of the hair, pick out some individual lines with a sharp charcoal pencil. Use a charcoal pencil on the side to place the large shadow shapes on the side of the cheeks, forehead, and neck. Blend these with a chamois cloth, darken the tone, then blend a second time with a medium stomp or tortillon to ensure the smoothest tones possible. Finally, add the intense black of the shirt using a charcoal stick on the side. If you want the texture in the shirt to be unique, put it down with a different tool than the rest of the portrait, and then keep the strokes rough and un- blended. Page 25 of 37
