When the features are in the correct place, erase your guidelines and clean up the individual shapes and smaller details of the face with a charcoal pencil. Sketch in the hair line, and use willow charcoal to lay in the general pattern of hair growth, then switch to a sharp charcoal pencil to add the more delicate lines and flyaway hairs on the outside of the head. Follow these same steps when you begin the finished portrait on charcoal paper. When you have all of the features carefully drawn on the face and you're sure that the size and placement is correct, begin laying in tone. It's best to work from the top down, so I generally start in the eyes. Darken the upper lid, pupils, and spokes of color in the irises, then blend some of the lines with the stomp or tortillon.
