Coming out from a bend I saw some clouds on the far horizon breaking up. The sun was low
and light was streaming from behind the clouds. Darker clouds were moving towards me and I
could see what seemed to be the ridges of evergreen disappear from view.
It was another one of those wide open spaces. I could not see the channel that previous experi-
ence said wove back and forth, but I was sure at the end of this open space would be the camp
I was looking for. It had to be somewhere ahead of me.
Still the wind was strong, the sky darkening with darker clouds filling the sky, I thought for a
few moments how far back the one camp I had seem in the morning was……..”you don’t go
backwards to go forwards” a paddler had told me. I wasn’t tired, a little weary, I drank some
water, but I had lots of energy so moving forward I determined to find a camp and stop.
