           6. Estimation of Crude Fibre

           SCOPE
To estimate the Crude Fibre in feed and feed stuffs.

           PRINCIPLE
FWhen a sample of moisture and fat free plant
material is boiled first with dilute acid and then with
dilute alkali, the soluble carbohydrates and proteins
go into solution and thus removed.

FThe undissolved residue left behind represents Picture - 1 Picture - 2
cellulose hemi cellulose and lignin. All these put
              together are called Crude Fibre.

FWhen this residue after drying and weighing is
heated in an oven and a shed in a muffle furnace,
the fibre being organic in nature is burnt away
leaving behind the ash which represents mainly the
mineral matter. The fiber content is obtained by
deducting the weight of ash from the weight of the
              dried residue before putting furnace.

                                                                       Picture - 3 Picture - 4
