7. Estimation of Total Ash
SCOPE
To estimate the Total ash in feed and feed stuffs.
PRINCIPLE
The total content of mineral matter i.e. Non-
combustible portion of the feed is called total ash.
APPARATUS

FAnalytical Balance, 1 mg / 0.1 mg accuracy

PROCEDURE
FMuffle furnace (Picture - 1) FTake silica crucible record empty weight (A) and
FSilica crucible, 25 ml (Picture - 3) tare it. (Picture - 5)
FDesiccators. (Picture - 4) FThen weigh 2 gm of sample in a silica crucible.
Ignite the sample on a burner till smoke cease off.

FPlace the crucible in a muffle furnace and heat to

600 C +/- 20 C. Kept for 90 minutes. At this
temperature all organic matter will be burnt leaving
behind minerals. Remove the crucible from the
furnace carefully and cool it in desiccators to room
temperature and weigh again (B).(Picture - 7)
Note:
1. The ash may be used for the determination of

minerals and acid insoluble ash.
2. Since the ash is hygroscope, weighing should be
done quickly after taken out from dessicator.
