18. Estimation of Aflatoxin (Modified Romer's Method)
FLaboratory stirrer motorized (picture - 3)
INTRODUCTION
FAflatoxin are toxins produced by the fungus, FGraduated cylinder, 100 ml, 50 ml, 10 ml (picture -
Aspergillusflavus which grows on certain feed 4)
ingredients like ground nut cake, yellow maize and FSeparating funnel, 250 ml, 100 ml (picture - 5)
fish meal, etc., in presence of high moisture.
FGlass funnel, 50 mm, 70 mm, diameter (picture - 6)
FAflatoxin belongs to a class of organic compounds FFilter paper fluted (picture - 7)
and exists in several forms eg, B1 and B2, G1 and
G2 and M1 and M2. Aflatoxin B1 is the most FCulture tube, 5 ml (picture - 8)
potent of all toxins.
FGraduated pipette, 1 ml, 5 ml (picture - 9)
FDetermination of aflatoxin in poultry feeds is most FGlass micro syringe, 10 microlitre (picture - 10)
important by the virtue of the fact that more than 0.2
ppm aflatoxin in feeds causes considerable FPre coated thin layer chromatography plate (picture
mortality in young chicks and drastically reduces - 11)
egg production in layers. FUV Cabinet (picture - 12)

PRINCIPLE
The aflatoxin is extracted with acetone , treated with FHot Air Oven pre calibrated (picture - 14)
cupric carbonate and ferric gel to eliminate fluorescent FHot plate or Water bath (picture - 15)
materials other than aflatoxin, washed with acid and
alkali and extracted with chloroform, dried rediluted
with chloroform and spotted in an activated TLC plate
with standards and ascertained the concentration by
visual comparison method in a UV viewing cabinet.
