Boating Knots: Bends

This knot was used by the US Navy until 1962 to
tether its lighter-than-air ships (zeppelins). Lieutenant
Commander Charles Rosendahl, skipper of the zeppelin
Los Angeles and an American aeronautical hero, reportedly
allowed only one bend to be used on his airship and on
his mooring lines, the zeppelin bend, thus its other name.
