CALL FOR GREATER MEMBER SUPPORT OF
GHOST NET INITIATIVE he Ghost Net Initiative (GNI)
was started in June 2016 to
Thighlight the important work
the seismic industry does regularly
to clean derelict fishing gear and
other debris from our oceans. It has
gained the attention of the Healthy
Seas organization, with whom we
now partner. The Bureau of Safety
and Environmental Enforcement's
(BSEE) Marine Trash and Debris
Program Coordinator has requested
inclusion of our findings in NOAA's
Marine Debris bi-annual report.
The Interagency Marine Debris
Coordinating Committee‘s
(IMDCC) bi-annual report to the
U.S. Congress will cover 2016-2017
and will be drafted in 2018. They
hope to include estimates of monies
spent on removal and debris
quantities, as well as types and
quantities of debris. This report will
be made directly to Congress and is
an amazing opportunity to highlight
the significant, environmentally
beneficial work the G&G industry is
doing.
We need ALL IAGC members to
more actively support this initiative
by providing us your companies'
ocean debris pickup data. We want
to continue to highlight the good
work you do in being good corporate
ocean users.
