MAKING YOUR APPLICATION
The first opportunity for a potential employer to assess candidates for employment
is when they read the application form or the Curriculum Vitae (C.V.)
Once you have made contact with an employer you will be told either to complete a
standard application form or to submit a C.V. (see "Creating Your Curriculum
Vitae" page 9)
Preparation calls for thought and effort. The self-appraisal that you will have
conducted will assist greatly and provide much of the basic information you require
Do not under-estimate this stage - it could be the decisive step in getting the job of
your choice
Employers will use the written applications to assess which candidates best match
the specifications they have laid down for the job, and may even try to estimate their
potential for future development
From these assessments an employer will then prepare a short list of candidates to
interview. The object of the initial application is to get an interview. It is the only
information that a potential employer has about you
The following tips may be helpful in preparing application forms or a C.V.
List what you know about the job:
Functions, responsibilities, training prospects and conditions of employment
List what you know about the type of person being sought:
Qualifications: Experience: Personal qualities: Interests: Personality and Ambitions
Employers make judgments about people based on the application:
They will not be impressed by forms which are: Incomplete: Difficult to read:
Inaccurate: Vague: Unconvincing or bearing signs of having been completed
without attention or thought
Do not delay:
If you have an application form, or need to prepare a C.V., do not put it out of your
mind and leave it to the last minute. Try to complete it within a couple of days
