had instilled such as justice and equity disappeared (17).
The companions of the Prophet (p) who took side with
al-Imam Ali (as) were killed, as well as the companions
of al-Imam Ali and his supporters were killed and
imprisoned (18). The graves of the martyrs of the battle of
(Badr) (2A.H/624) were plowed (19), and many traditions
(ahadith) of the Prophet (p) were fabricated (20) in order
to consolidate his rule. Mu‘awiya had no conception of
anything beyond his rule (21) and expanding his power
in the territories already conquered by Muslims and to
engage in further conquests to the North and North West
of Syria. There was no moral value for any of his actions,
and he spared no effort to take the oath of allegiance for
his son Yazid from the Muslims throughout the Muslim
world. The Muslims were terrified of his power and
strength, and had no courage to challenge the current
situation or express their views. The divine and spiritual
aspect of Islam were diminished, and the Maxim “Might
is right” become the law of the day. Virtue ended, the
freedom of conscience eliminated, and faith and belief
began to be sold for gold and silver coins. This situation
of oppression and excesses perpetrated on high ranking
when his son Yazid came to power.
Imam Hussein (as) the guardian of the religion of Islam
and the interpreter of its objectives and humanitarian
values by word and deed had to counter the Umayyads
