feelings and determination and declared their support
for him. They did not let any opportunity pass without
exposing the policy of Yazid’s intimidation, threats and
humiliation, hence expressing their grievances. Zuhair b.
al-Qain al-Bajali (d.61A.H/680), who had been a supporter
of the caliph ‘Uthman joined Imam Hussein (as) and
became one of his most enthusiastic supporters (21).
Zuhair attempted to convince Yazid’s army that Yazid
and his governors were no more than tyrant rulers who
should be abandoned. He enjoined people to follow
(Ahl-ul-Bait) the progeny of the prophet Muhammad (p),
and join Imam Hussein (as) with his revolution against
Yazid (22). Thus, a combination of opposition to tyranny
and support of (Ahl-ul-Bait) the family of the Prophet
(p) is reflected in the stance taken by Imam Hussein’s
supporters. He described his supporters as people who
could not be matched in terms of their devoutness, piety,
fear of God, honesty, and their obedience to their Imam
as well as his family members (23). They fought with
marvelous courage and embraced martyrdom to serve
their purpose (24).
Saeid b. ‘Abdullah al-Hanafi (d.61A.H/680), said to Imam
Hussein (as),“By Allah, if I was to know that I will be killed,
then revived, then scattered, and this be repeated to
me seventy times, I would not leave you until I meet my
demise in sacrifice for you. How would I not do this, and
