The Revolution of Imam Hussein
it is a mere single death, and it is the dignity that never
has any ending” (25).
Al-Hurr (freeman) b. Yazid al-Riyahi al-Tamimi was
the commander of the first battalion which intercepted
Imam Hussein (as) on his way to Karbala. They were
thirsty when they met him. They asked him for water. He
immediately told his men to give water to the army of
al-Hurr and also to their horses. When Imam Hussein (as)
was engaged in battle against the Umayyad army, al-
Hurr left his army after he said to a member of his tribe
“I am choosing between paradise and hell and by God I
will not prefer anything over paradise even if I have been
cut into pieces and burnt.” He then joined Imam Hussein
(as) after he apologised for the disturbances he caused
him, his family and his companions and fought bravely
until he was heavily wounded. When Imam Hussein (as)
came forward to save al-Hurr he reached him while he
was dying. While he was wiping the blood from his face
he said to him, “You are a freeman as your mother named
you. You are a freeman in this world and the hereafter.”
Al-Abbas (his brother) (d.61A.H/680), was the only
hope for getting water for women, children and the
companions of his brother, because al-Abbas was the
holder of the banner and known by the title the greatest
warrior of Arabia reflecting the extraordinary strength of
his father (Amir al- Mou’minin) (the prince of believers)
