TOOLS & MATERIALS
Twelve-plait rope
Swedish fid (optional)
Vinyl tape
Scissors or sharp knife
The amount of rope necessary for this splice equals the circumference of the
rope times seven (e.g., 1-inch/25 mm rope has a circumference of 3.14 inches/80
mm, so to make this splice in 1-inch/25 mm rope would require 22 inches/560
mm of rope). Determine this distance from the working end and tape the rope
there. Unlay enough rope to be able to tape each of the 12 strand ends. Then
unlay the rope to the tape, taking care to retain the individual twists.
Form the eye above the tape and mark the throat (see (A) next page).
Group the strands into six pairs, each pair having one strand with its yarns
twisting clockwise and an adjacent strand twisting counterclockwise. Tape the
pairs together (B).
Divide the six strands into two groups, taking the three strand pairs on one
side (to the left of drawing (C) on next page) and reeving them directly through
the middle of the rope at the mark on the throat. It is important to maintain the
twist on the strands as they pass through the rope, and they must lay just right—
not too loose or too tight. Snug the strands to remove excess slack.
