TOOLS & MATERIALS
Eight-plait rope
Chain
Sharp knife or scissors
Electrical friction tape
Serving mallet or reel-type serving tool
Whipping twine
Liquid rope seal (optional)
Measure the length of 12 links of chain to determine the required splice length
for the rope. As an example, this distance is about 12 inches (300 mm) for 3/16-
inch (5 mm) chain. Pick up the eight-plait rope and measure the appropriate
distance from the working end. Apply a good tight whipping (see chapter 13) at
that point and unlay the rope back to the whipping. Notice the construction of
the rope—four pairs of strands, each pair consisting of one strand of yarns
twisted clockwise and one with yarns twisted counterclockwise.
