Eight-plait rope
Swedish fid
Vinyl tape
Scissors or sharp knife
Measure off 12 inches (300 mm) for the splice and, beginning there, form the
eye. At the throat, with the point of the fid, separate the strands into clockwise
and counterclockwise groups.
Reeve, or insert, the tail end through the opening by the fid. Move down three
picks along the standing part from where the tail emerges, separate the strands in
the same way as before, and reeve the tail back through in the opposite direction.
Repeat this process twice.
