made with the players via email. It is advisable to maintain regular contact with
players and parents and to keep them updated.
• In conjunction with coaches prepare trials programmes pre tournaments.
Consideration should be given to exam periods, school and public holidays bearing
in mind these may vary between UK and ROI. Normally enlarged squads can be
selected and later reduced. This programme should be approved by the
HPD/HPWG.
• Careful consideration must be given to method and timing of announcement.
Unsuccessful players should be informed before squad announcements on the HI
website. Squad announcements should be sent to HI Office for inclusion on the
website once dropped players have been informed. Please be considerate of young
players and their exams – avoid critical exam periods and notification should be at an
appropriate time (ie. not late at night) to allow for the parents to inform the players.
• Where a player has been selected for two squads, the higher ranked squad usually
takes precedence. Coaches should liaise with each other in the interests of the
player’s long term athlete development and the HPD will make any final decisions
where agreement cannot be reached.
• Overplaying should be an important consideration given the volume of school and
club hockey combined with other sports, work, social interaction and academic
demands. Too much of either can lead to poor performance therefore lifestyle
management is essential in achieving the correct balance. A presentation is
available to support parents and players to self manage their training loads.
• Once final squad selected, details should be forwarded to Hockey Office to include
Full Name, DOB, Province, School, Club, Home address Tel Nos (H) & (M) plus
Names and Tel Nos for Parents / Guardians / Next of Kin.
• Arrange and communicate trial / training venues, dates, equipment required with the
HI Office. It essential that any late change of venue or cancellations are notified to
the Hockey Ireland office.
• Distribute parental consent forms to U16 and U18 squads (See Appendix 2)

6.1 Before Travelling

be checked and meeting times confirmed for at least 2.5 hrs pre airport departure.
Ferry meeting times can be shorter.
• Booking of extra bags and GK bags should be discussed with the Office prior to
booking online. Player sticks should go into 1-2 GK bags to reduce costs.

the players to travel unaccompanied by their parents (See Appendix 2.1)
