Outdoor spaces adjacent to classrooms can function QUADS
for small group interaction. They can be utilized by
teachers and students as a break-out space directly
related to the indoor classroom activities. Examples
include: ‘hands-on’ Art and Science activities,
reading, discussion, and other small group activities.
These areas are typically low-tech spaces with limited
seating, enhanced with shade trees, buffered by
plantings and green space.
The outdoor teaching areas can be themed to relate
to areas of study. For example, a space with sundials
and angular concrete seat walls could be used for
a mathematical geometry lesson; an instructional,
student maintained garden could be used for
Science; a sculpture garden could be utilized for Art
studies, and so forth.

Quads should be located near the center of campus or near the Multipurpose Room or
Student Union to promote social gathering and interaction among students. Shade for the
quad shall be provided by utilizing adjacent buildings, trees, a shade structure, or other
design features in order to maximize the use of this space when there is a need to overflow
into the area during assemblies.
Classrooms within the vicinity may be affected by noise levels while the quad is in use,
therefore screen buffer planting may be useful in alleviating noise transfer to other spaces.
