NGC Confirms Discovery of Fourth Known 1854-S $5
Sarasota, FL— “It’s the discovery of a lifetime... like finding an original Picasso at a garage sale,” said Chairman Mark
Salzberg of Numismatic Guaranty Corporation. (www.NGCcoin.com) When a coin, originally thought to be counterfeit was
presented for authentication by NGC. The fourth known 1854-S Liberty Head Half Eagle, a previously unknown surviving
example of one of America’s greatest coins has indeed been officially authenticated. Until now, there were only three genuine
1854-S $5 gold pieces known, explained Salzberg.
The owner of the coin is a life-long New England resident who wants to remain anonymous, was stunned when informed
that the piece was indeed a genuine, multi-million dollar rare coin. He had shown it to a few collectors and dealers recently
at a coin show, but everyone said they thought it was a fake because Mint records indicate that there were only 3 genuine
surviving coins known. Only 268 Half Eagles were struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1854. One surviving example is in the
National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.; one is owned by the Pogue family of Texas;
and another has not been seen since it was stolen from Willis DuPont in Coconut Grove, Florida in 1967.
Upon carefully comparing the submitted coin to the images of the known examples in the Smithsonian and the Pogue
The 1854-S Half Eagle has Collection, it became quite clear that they was looking at a major find. NGC sought to be sure the coin was not the stolen
one of the lowest mintages DuPont example. The DuPont 1854-S $5 was the same piece sold in the October 1962 Stack’s sale of the Samuel W. Wolfson
of any regular issue U.S. coin Collection. After locating images from the Wolfson auction, they were able to determine that the coin in our offices was not
made for circulation and is one the coin that was stolen from the DuPont family.
of the first coins that came out of
the California Gold Rush from the U.S. Mint in San Francisco. Additional information can be found on the NGC website at http://www.ngccoin.com/NGCCoinExplorer/CoinDetail.ID=25UN.
