Chapter 7 THE REALITIES
When Did Obesity Start ?
Well, general consensus seems to be sometime in the late 1950’s or early 1960s. In other words, 65 years ago.
But, as a guy almost 80, I can tell you it was much further back than the 1950s. When I was a boy of 7 in the
early 40s, both my grandmothers were obese. My paternal grandfather died of Obesity before I was born.
This pandemic started in 1975 as shown on the next page. But my role models were obese before then.
The Cause Of Obesity Began BILLIONS Of Years Ago.
The first plant life on land came out of the oceans roughly 1.2 “billion” years ago as algal mat.
Animal life came out of the oceans roughly 400-million years ago following the plants they ate in the ocean.
All plant life contains sugar which is essential for the energy we need from our food called carbohydrates.
Fruit has more sugar than vegetables which is why most of us like fruits more than vegetables.
Sugarcane and sugar beet contain a lot of NATURAL sugar called FRUCTOSE. (It’s actually fructose & glucose.)
The evolution of our taste for sugar as an “essential” food ingredient caused major economic & social changes.
It drove colonizing of tropical nations where labor-intensive sugar plantations & sugar manufacturing thrived.
Sugar was a luxury in Europe prior to 1750 when it became more widely available as shown on the next page.
It became popular by 1850, at which time sugar was considered a “necessity”. That’s 165 years – not 65 years.
Industrial sugar refinement processes often involve bleaching and dehydration, producing a white, odorless,
crystalline powder with a sweet taste, devoid of vitamins and minerals, called SUCROSE or Table Sugar.
By 1900, it played a central role as an additive in food production and food consumption all over the world.
This refined form of sucrose is referred to as table sugar or just sugar that is added to almost everything today.
About 175 million metric tons of sugar were produced worldwide in 2013. (That is 386 BILLION pounds.)
WE NEED SUGAR (CARBOHYDRATES) TO SURVIVE – BUT NOT THAT MUCH.
Nature made food sweet so we’d like it and eat it. And we did . . . and still do, BUT IN EXCESS. An Addiction.
Humans came along, refined & added extra sugar to our Natural Foods. They stuck this unnatural food in
cans, bottles and every conceivable package and sold it as NUTRITIOUS because it contained added sugar.
Our current crisis started 165 years ago with the excessive processing of sugar into highly “PROCESSED” foods.
Then food processors ADVERTISED them to our grandparents as being healthy foods BECAUSE OF THE SUGAR.
THEY BELIEVED WHAT THEY WERE TOLD BECAUSE THEY LOVED IT, SO DID THE GOVERNMENTS, SO DO YOU.
Sugar Addiction is killing us slowly . . . . . by the millions. Obesity, Diabetes, Heart, Kidney problems, Cancer.
We believed it was good for us because of what we were taught as children from our parents & grandparents.
We love bread, cereals, cheeseburgers (my fav) candies, soft drinks, an endless list that in EXCESS is killing us;
AND OUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN. It’s Incredibly Difficult To Correct Old Beliefs.
IF Government & Medical Authorities Were Right - Why Did Obesity Rise So Rapidly Since 1975 ?
