Chapter 2 LIFESTYLE
Obesity And Your Metabolism
The Mayo Clinic says: “Metabolism” is the process by which your body converts what you eat and drink into
energy (calories from food). (Sugary Drinks count in your food ounces per day – water doesn’t.)
“Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)” is while you're at rest; your body needs energy for all its "hidden" functions,
such as breathing, circulating blood, digestion, adjusting hormone levels, and growing and repairing cells.
“Active Metabolic Rate (AMR)” is when you're active; you need more energy than your BMR resting rate.
AS YOU GET OLDER your Metabolism slows down. So does your AMR and your need for calories and FOOD
“Obese Metabolic Active Rate (OMAR)” An OBESE person’s OMAR REQUIRES them to eat even more food
than “skinny” people to survive – PROPORTIONATE TO THEIR ADDED WEIGHT. The larger you are, the more
energy (food/calories) you need to transport all that added weight – day and night. All that added weight
hanging around does for you is: slows you down, makes you tired and creates aches and pains.
However, if you eat more than your OMAR requires, you gain even more weight – mostly in the wrong places.
As you get even fatter, your OMAR INCREASES and you need, yet again, even more food to survive.
