Chapter 3 MYTHS • FALLACIES & MISCONCEPTIONS
Obesity And Hunger
DYSPEPSIA (dis·pep·see·a)
In my 7 years as an overweight, then obese, then morbidly obese person, no matter how much I ate, I was
still always hungry . . . . with indigestion and upset stomach pain. I never knew why.
Dr. Patrick Nemechek, Osteopathic Medicine tells us why:
HEARTBURN: (Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD) occurs when the esophagus (just above the
stomach) is exposed to acid FROM THE STOMACH from overeating. (Not From. Nature’s Healthy Way)
HUNGER PANGS: (Dyspepsia: sour stomach . . . NOT Heartburn) comes from TOO MUCH ACID IN THE
STOMACH from eating Too Much Food (carbohydrates / SUGAR).
Dr. Nemwchek points out that over many years of overeating, we soon realize that more food made the
sour stomach pains (Dyspepsia) go away. Same as antacid tablets do.
“Dyspepsia is the abnormal accumulation of acid in the stomach. The acid accumulates because it is not being
emptied normally, not because our stomach is producing too much acid”.
“We confuse dyspepsia with hunger pains because you may feel shaky, slightly nauseated or weak. Eating food
makes those painful symptoms disappear. They go away because food stimulates the stomach to empty. The
food therefore causes the excess acid to be emptied into the small intestine and your symptoms resolve”.
“So the next time you feel similar “hunger” symptoms (Dyspepsia), you’ll eat food again and the symptoms go
away again. After a while, it becomes almost second nature”.
