NO Dagwood – You’re NOT Hungry
So don’t worry if you hear your stomach growling – it’s typically totally normal. However, let it be a reminder
of the complex processes going on to keep your gut, and your whole body, healthy. To support these
processes and optimize your gut bacteria and microbiome as a whole, keep these recommendations in mind:
(It’s NOT Hunger.)
Are there any digestive health conditions that actually make it more difficult to lose weight?
Lisa Ganjhu, DO
“Losing weight for the most part is really basic math. In order to lose weight, you have to burn more calories
than you consume. There really aren’t any digestive disorders that make losing weight difficult. Actually, since
the digestive tract is responsible for getting nutrients from food, disorder in the digestive tract may cause
malnutrition and weight loss. There are certain endocrine disorders that make weight loss difficult. The main
reason people gain weight is that they eat too much and exercise too little.”
WebMD says: It takes about six to eight hours for food to pass through your stomach and small intestine.
(Coincidently, just the length of time you need to sleep – isn’t Nature wonderful AND SMART.)
Science Learning Hub says:
40% to 45% of your body’s total daily energy is used for your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) (PAGE: 30)
Of this 15% to 20% is needed for your Peristalsis DIGESTIVE SYSTEM (opposite page)
32% of your body’s energy expenditure is required for physical activity.
8% is used for your thermic effect (keeping you warm).
Remember: YOUR Digestive System uses 15% to 20% of your energy – THAT’S IMPORTANT
