Looking for someone who is in charge

Yoon: Excuse me, is there anything I can do for you, sir?
Carl: Yes, I am looking for Mr. Chang, Managing Director in charge of the Overseas Importing and
Exporting Department. I have an appointment with him. Can you check is he’s here, please?
Yoon: You came to the right place and without a doubt. Mr. Chang is the person to see for anything
Related to business. Yes, he’s here. Please come in. He’s that man over there.
Carl: Thanks! Do you mean the person over there with the short hair?

Yoon: That’s right. He is the one over there with the short hair and thick beard. Can you see him?
He is my boss from the Overseas Importing and Exporting Department. I will tell him that you’re
here. I’ll escort you to the reception area of his office. Please follow me.
Carl: Thanks! We have a few details to clear up on the contract. I’ll wait for him at the reception
area.

1. Are you in charge of an area or department in your office? If it’s not you, who
is? What are the usual concerns of the one in charge of the area or office?

Sample answer:
Yes, I am in charge of supervising the unit heads of our district. As area supervisor, I monitor the
production and sales of the plants under the care of the unit heads. I make regular inspections
and meetings. I also make reports and important decisions for the efficient running of the of-
fices and plants.

2. Why do guests and other clients usually want to meet the person in
charge?

Sample answer:
Guests and clients usually ask for the person in charge especially if they want to make future
business deals. Having a personal introduction helps in retaining the memory of a person in
someone’s mind. Also, some people want to relay important or confidential matters to the per-
son in charge. These things cannot be simply relayed to a go-between.

3. As the one in charge of an area or department in your office, do you always
find time to see the people who want to see you? Why?
