EL - 4 Electrical system – electrical components
IN 6. Use and maintenance of batteries in winter:
a. Keep the batteries fully charged usually to prevent the density of electrolyte solution from too low that is
DI liable to freezing, container bursting, polar plate bending and active material shattering and other failures.
b. Since the capacity of the battery in winter is lower, preheat should be performed for cold start of the
engine. Each duration of turning the starter on shall not exceed 15s, and interval between the engine starting
EG
shall be 2~3min. If the engine cannot be started for 3 times, find and fix the troubles before starting the engine
again.
TR
7. Use considerations:
a. Explosive gas may emit from batteries. Before maintenance of the battery, the engine compartment shall
AX
be well ventilated. To avoid occurrence of electric arc, the battery cable of the negative pole(-) shall be
removed at first, and shall be connected at last.
FR b. The battery electrolyte solution is extremely hazardous, it may damage equipment and cause serious burn to
people. When maintaining the batteries, a barrel of high soda concentration solution shall be prepared as the
neutralizer. Wear goggles and protective clothes to prevent from getting injured.
ST
c. Never cause a shortcircuit between the two terminals of the battery, otherwise, the battery will give off heat
rapidly and may burst. Additionally, the gas emitted from the batteries can be easily ignited, so never use open
BR
flame around the batteries.
d. When removing the battery, disconnect the cable from the negative pole, then the cable from the positive
BW
pole. Dismantle the fixing bracket for the battery, then take out the battery from it. The installation of battery
shall be finished in the reverse order.
EL e. Any harness of the battery must not be disconnected after staring the engine, otherwise, the electrical
system (electronic elements) may be damaged.
f. The generator is a negatively earthed, so the polarity of the battery shall be the same, otherwise, the
battery will discharge through the silicon diode, which may burn out the diode.
Danger
The electrolyte solution contained in the battery is dilute acid. This is hazardous liquid to person.
Attention is required when handling to prevent burns to the skin or clothes, especially, avoid splash into
eye. Once battery electrolyte solution splashes into eye, rinse the eye with plenty of clean water, then
seek medical assistance.
