ADVOCATE’S VIEW
KNT: What more can communities do to raise awareness about human trafficking?
Allegra: Keep an eye out for strange people hanging around the neighborhood. Watch your sur-
roundings. Get to know your neighbors and be aware of any registered offenders living in the
neighborhood. Become educated with local law enforcement and know who to call when you
see something wrong.

KNT: What about the church?
Allegra: Know your fellow congregants. Be that friend that endangered victims can go to. Lead-
ers should speak truthfully about this topic and bring awareness.

KNT: What should you do when suspect trafficking traps in your church?
Allegra: Be cautious not to fall into the trap. Relocate to another church. “God knows your
heart, but the pastor does not have to know what’s in your wallet.”

KNT: Regarding the recent news of the catholic clergy in Pennsylvania where decades of abuse
were brought to light; what do you think should to them?
Allegra: Max Punishment. The church should take ownership in their actions and reactions.

KNT: What are typical traps used by traffickers? What clever ways do they use to enslave peo-
ple.
Allegra: Runaways are easy targets. Family members are easy targets and mostly parents are
guilty of it. Church traps – promise of scholarships or bills paid.

Human trafficking is a form of modern slavery—a multi-billion dollar criminal industry that
denies freedom to 20.9 million people around the world. And no matter where you live,
chances are it's happening nearby. From the girl forced into prostitution at a truck stop, to the
man discovered in a restaurant kitchen, stripped of his passport and held against his will. All
trafficking victims share one essential experience: the loss of freedom.
Please check out the website to learn how to recognize potential red flags. By knowing the
indicators of human trafficking is a key step in identifying more victims and helping them find
the assistance they need. To request help or report suspected human trafficking call the
National Human Trafficking Hotline or text “HELP” to BeFree (233733).
