any given minute one can learn hundreds of words and with each
individual word one fulfills the mitzvah of studying Torah. Each
mitzvah creates an angel to advocate for his soul. Regarding this,
the pasuk states (Mishle 19:4) “Wealth attracts many friends,” הָמָדּקְַה
meaning by virtue of the wealth of Torah, as the Vilna Gaon
writes in his commentary on Mishle. This is unlike any of the ,םיִיוּצְמ םיִנָיְנִע הָמַּכּ םיִיוּלְתּ רוּבִּדַּה קֶלֵח ןַיְנִעְבּ הֵנִּה
other mitzvot which take time to fulfill.

It is very well known that the last chapter of Mishle known as
 “Eshet Chayil” is a reference to the Torah. This chapter concludes ,
 with the words (Mishle 31:29) “many daughters demonstrated רֶפֵסַּה 'ה תרְַזֶעְבּ וּנרְַבִּח רָבְכּ תוּליִכרְוּ ערָָה ןוֹשָׁל ןַיְנִע לַע
strength but you excelled over all of them,” meaning, even
 though the performance of each mitzvah creates strength, power
 and might for one’s soul, or alternatively at its plain meaning,
creates literal strength, since each and every individual mitzvah
 creates a defender who advocates this person’ soul.
meaning you the “Eshet Chayil” have surpassed them all, since
 one hour of studying Torah creates hundreds of angels.
 man completes his mission HaKadosh Baruch Hu is joyous with .
him, as the pasuk (Tehilim 104:31) relates “Hashem rejoices in
 His works” and He glorifies Himself Above with this person, as .
the pasuk states (Yeshaya 49:3) “Israel, through you I become
 glorified.

 From this attribute of the power of speech as it is used appropriately, ,
one can ponder on what would happen in an opposite sense; the
enormity of the loss caused by one who does damage with it
 at lightning speed. In so doing he can create several hundred ,ןיִפדְוֹר הָּל ןיֵאֶשׁ הָוְצִמוּ ,הָוְצִמ תֵמְכּ איִה ,ןיִשׁרְוֹדּ הָּל
 prosecuting angels in a very short period of time.

of all this, the pasuk singled out the imperative to guard one’s
 speech more than anything else. I have written a short essay םָדָאָה זרֵָדְּזִיֶּשְׁכוּ .
 on this subject and I have entitled it “Chovat HaShemirah” (the .
obligation to guard one’s speech). Perhaps Hashem will allow

 1. Rashi there: “friends” also alludes to the advocating angels created by
 this person’s learning.
 2. As explained above, that one can speak many words in a minute.
