victim of their vile remarks. This is one of the reasons why man

he will become weary of rebuffing their words.

about this evil person, and even though he is not honoring him
in a way that people would mistakenly think that he holds the . א
Rasha in high esteem because he greets him in the same manner
in which he would greet a wealthy person because of his wealth
or because of a hope that the wealthy person will do him some
favor, this greeting of a Rasha is still a sin since it is a gesture ב
of honor. And even if it is permissible to greet a wealthy person
with honor (for some personal motive) it is not permitted to do
so to a Rasha. The only exception to this rule would be if this

on that basis is it permissible to greet (honor) him as one would

showing respect. But one may not extol him or speak well of him
in the presence of other people. Regarding this, Chazal have said
(Gemara Sotah 41b) that in this world one is allowed to flatter

Even to praise an upstanding (kosher) Jew more than is warranted
by his deeds, merely for the sake of flattery is obviously forbidden.

beneficial will evolve from those remarks. Regarding this, our
sages have written in our holy writings that it is permissible for
a husband to flatter his wife for the sake of marital peace or to
flatter one’s rabbi so that he will teach him Torah or flatter his ג

The Gemara Sotah (41b) teaches the following: “Rebbe Elazar
