must be of humble spirit. Thus was said about Moshe Rabbeinu
A”H, that he was “exceedingly humble” (Bamidbar 12:3) and not
merely “humble.” Therefore our sages have instructed us to be
exceedingly humble in spirit (Mishnayot Avot 4:4). Please see
that reference and what was additionally written there.

It is unnecessary to repeat here the doings of those who speak
Lashon Hara and Rechilut since we have already explained them
at length with Hashem’s help in Sefer Chafetz Chayim and Sefer
Shemirat HaLashon, their laws and the associated mussar. One
who wants to learn the laws and the mussar of the ten qualities
listed above should learn these two topics in Sefer Chafetz
Chayim.

One must also be very careful in the way that he speaks in order
not to embarrass anyone. The severity of the sin of embarrassing
someone is clear to all, that this law applies even if is done
privately with no one else present. Even when reprimanding a
person, which is a Torah obligation, the Torah warns us not to
speak harshly to the point where the “victim’s” face turns color
(lit., turns white), as Chazal have said in Gemara Arachin (16b) in
commenting on the pasuk (Vayikrah 19:17) “You shall rebuke.”
(How far does this extend?) Does that mean that even if his (the
victim’s) face blanches white? (In response the pasuk adds) The
pasuk teaches (Vayikrah 19:17) “and you shall not come to sin
because of him,” and especially if one causes embarrassment that
is not in the context of a rebuke, the sin is very great. Chazal
have taught this concept in Gemara Babba Metziah (58b) “It
was taught in the presence of Rav Nachman Bar Yitzchak, that
whoever publicly embarrasses his fellow Jew is as if he killed
him, etc.” Please see the enormity of the punishment (awaiting
someone who publicly embarrasses his ‘friend’) as Chazal have
taught in that reference. “In the West (i.e., in Eretz Yisrael)
what are they especially careful to avoid?” Causing someone’s
face to turn white from embarrassment. Rebbe Chammah said
