                                      Introduction

there was a loss (and now he must correct that deed). Rather
Shemuel is alluding to the everlasting assets of man, namely his
Torah and observance of mitzvot. Man is obligated each day
to think carefully about his actions during the course of the
day as to whether or not they were tainted by his Yetzer Hara.
(Please reference my comments on this subject in Sefer Shemirat
               HaLashon).

               (2) Man should also ponder that by virtue of the forbidden words he
speaks he attracts defilement to his lips, as the prophet (Yeshayah
6:5) laments, “because I am a man with impure lips.” 5

(This concept is brought down in the Holy Zohar, perashat
Mehtzorah: Rebbe Chiyya said “One who speaks Lashon Hara,
they defile all of his limbs (organs) and he is punished with
Tzara’at, meaning later on, since he brought onto himself an
impurity on his lips the Dark Side (Sitrah Acharintah) now has
the power to defile all of the organs of his soul even more. 6

This type of defilement is far worse than the defilement of a
person defiled by a carcass. Defilement by a carcass can be
purified by immersion in water, whereas defilement by speaking
forbidden words cannot be purified by all the waters of the world
combined unless this person does Teshuvah. Moreover, since
he provoked the defilement on himself, even if only a small
amount, he causes the Power of the Impurity to defile him from
Above, meaning, to the source of his soul. Chazal have taught
this concept in Gemarea Yomah (39a) “(If) one defiles himself
Below, they defile him Above. If he defiles himself a little, they
               will greatly defile him.”

               (3) Each morning immediately after the Amidah prayer we request
of Hashem – Protect my tongue from (speaking) bad. But when
is this request relevant? (Answer) When we search into our soul

               5. By virtue of his speech.
               6. As it later states, “One who slightly defiles himself below (in this world),
they (Heaven) will defile him more.”
