The lesson that man must learn from this is that man’s Yetzer
Hara constantly lays in ambush for him to commit sin, as Chazal
have said (Gemara Sukkah 52b, Gemara Kedushin 30b), that the "םִירְָצִמִּמ םֶכְתאֵצְבּ ךְרֶֶדַּבּ םָירְִמְל ךָיֶהלֱֹא 'ה הָשָׂע רֶשֲׁא
Yetzer Hara overcomes man and renews itself each day, as David
HaMelech writes in Tehilim (37:32) “The Rasha watches (in .)'
ambush) for the Tzadik and attempts to kill him.” He (the Yetzer
Hara) crouches at the opening of man’s mouth (in order) to cause
him to sin, as the pasuk states (Beresheet 4:7) “sin crouches at the םֶהָבּ ליִגרָ הֶיְהִי אלְֹו ,הָלְּפִתַּה תֶא טֵעַמְל םִא יִכּ ,הרָיִמְשַּׁה
entranceway.” Because from that vantage point, if man loses his
concentration ever so slightly from guarding the words that come
out of his mouth, immediately he (the Satan) will loot from him a
large booty or a small booty, but in any event he won’t leave him
unscathed. Thus the Yetzer Hara resides specifically there, more
than in any other organ of the body, since one is most likely to
sin with one’s tongue.
Also there are times when the Yetzer Hara will find a great
“treasure” there (a marvelous opportunity to cause man to sin),
that he (the Yetzer Hara) convinces him to continue speaking
language (words) that are forbidden for an hour or for a half hour.
Within that time there can be found several hundred words of
forbidden speech and for each word this man will have to give a
reckoning and accounting. Can you imagine a greater “find” (for ,הרֵָבֲע רַבָע אלְֹו ,םָדָא בַשָׁי ,םרָָמֲאַמְכוּ .
the Yetzer Hara) than this, something which he cannot achieve .
in any other sin?! Therefore, that is precisely where the Yetzer
Hara constantly crouches in waiting; perhaps man will lose his
concentration for a moment and the Yetzer Hara will snare him
in his trap.
Subsequently I located in Midrash Rabbah on perashat Beresheet
(22:12) this very same concept, where the text states in
explanation of the pasuk (Beresheet 4:7) “Sin resides (crouches) הֶוַּאְתִמ וֹניֵאֶשׁ ,רֵשָׁכּ שׁיִא רָאְשִׁכּ ,םירִוּסֲאָה םירִוּבּדְִל
at the entranceway,” quoted as follows: Rav Tanchumah said:
“There are dogs in Rome who can fool people (in order to
get food). These dogs go and sit in front of a baker‘s stand in
the marketplace while he is selling bread. They pretend to be
sleeping and lull the baker into complacency. When the baker 18. This subject is elaborated in the Chafetz Chayim’s ZT”L Kuntres Zachor
