                  that He had made man on the earth, ±Óþ¢ÖêÖaó£ÖðÖêÞÖí-³Óêí'ÖNÖ¼-−ÞÌk      19. The waters were very powerful over the earth, ±Óþ¢ÖêÖí-ñÔ¼ð£ÒêÐôð'ÒêÐôe§þÐëÞÖbóÌ− †ÔnÔíÐî .¬−
                         and He grieved in His heart. :B ÞaÌñ-ñÓêë£ÑvԼгÌiÔî                      and they covered all the high mountains ó− flÌíÒëÐbÔí·ó−ÌþÖíÞÓí-ñÖke†qŠ×Ð−Ôî
                                                                                                       which were under all the heavens. :óÌ−ÞÖôÖMÔí-ñÖk³Ôì£Ôz-þÓLÎê

                                                                                              20. Fifteen amo¯hs above them [the mountains] íÖñм flÔôÐñÌô·íÖnÔêí¥ÑþÐNÓ¼L ¶ÑôÎì.×
         “Men of devastation”—who devastated the world. 345  :óÖñB¼Öí³ÓêeôÐnÌMÓL ,öBôÖnÌL−ÑLÐòÔê
                                                                                          did the waters prevail and they covered the mountains. :ó−ÞÌþÖíÞÓíe£qŠ×Ð−ÔîóÌ−¢ÖnÔíe£þÐëÞÖb
         [6] Adonoy was comforted that He had made.  .äÈNÈòéÄk'äíÆçÈðÄiÇå [å]                 21. All flesh that moved on the earth perished; ±Óþ †ÖêÖí-ñÔ¼N¤ÑôÒþÞÖí|þ¤ÖNÖa-ñÖk¼„ÔîÐèÌiÔî .ê×
                            It was a comfort 346 to Him  î−ÖòÖõÐñíÖ³Ð−ÖííÖôÖìÓò                                  birds, animals, beasts, íflÖiÔì¤Ôëe·íÖôÑíÐaÔëe ¹B¥¼Öa
                     that He created him [man] on earth,  ,ó−ÌòBzÐìÔzÔëBêÖþÐaÓL
                for had he been one of the heavenly beings  ó−ÌòB−ÐñÓ¼ÖíöÌôíÖ−ÖíelÌêÓL      and all creeping creatures that creep on the earth ±Óþ¢ÖêÖí-ñÔ¼±¤ÑþÒMÔí±Óþ£ÓMÔí-ñÖ×Ðëe
                   he would have caused them to rebel. 347  :öÖð−ÌþÐôÔôíÖ−Öí                                          and every man. :óÞÖðÖêÞÖíñ£Ò×Ðî
                                  And He grieved.  .áÅvÇòÀúÄiÇå                                 22. All that has a breath of the spirit of life— î−†ÖtÔêÐaó−‚ÌiÔìÔìe¶þ-³ÔôÐLÌò»þÓLÎêñ”Õk .ë×
                                        The man.  :óÖðÖêÖí                                                 everything on dry land—died. :e³ÞÑôí£ÖëÖþÞÖìÓaþ'ÓLÎêñ§ÒkÌô
                                     In His heart.  .BaÄììÆà                                             23. [He] obliterated every being |óe¤šÐ−Ôí-ñÖk-³ÓêìÔô‚ÌiÔî .è×
                                         Of God.  ,óBšÖôñÓL                                          that was on the surface of the ground; í †ÖôÖðÎêÞÖí−¤ÑòÐt-ñÔ¼|þ¤ÓLÎê
                  [Meaning:] it entered the thought of God  óBšÖôñÓLBzÐëÔLÎìÔôÐëíÖñÖ¼
                                to make him grieve.  ,Bë−̮μÔíÐñ                               from man to animals, to creeping creatures, ·NÓô¶Óþ-ðÔ¼·íÖôÑíÐa-ðÔ¼ó¥ÖðÖêÞÑô
            This is according to the translation of Onkelos. 348  .½eñКÐòeê óebÐþÔ³eíÓï                  and to the birds of the heaven. óÌ− flÔôÖMÔí¹B¤¼-ðÔ¼Ðî
                     An alternate explanation of óÓìÖpÌiÔî: 349  óÓìÖpÌiÔî:þÑìÔêþÖëÖc                They were obliterated from the earth. ±Óþ¢ÖêÖ í-öÌôe£ìÖnÌiÔî
                               God’s thought turned  óBšÖôñÓLBzÐëÔLÎìÔôíÖ×ÐõÓíÓò
                         from [applying] Divine Mercy  ó−ÌôÎìÔþ³ÔcÌnÌô                                AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA RASHI  é"ùøAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

                    He reconsidered what to do with man  óÖðÖêÖa ³BNμÔñíÔôî−ÖòÖõÐñíÖëÖLÎìÔôÐëíÖñÖ¼
                                                                                               [Meaning:] above the peaks of all the mountains,  ,ó−ÌþÖíÓíñÖkdÔëBb ñÓLíÖñмÔôÐñ
                          that He made upon the earth.  .±ÓþÖêÖaíÖNÖ¼ÓL
                                                                                              once the water reached the level of the summits. 100  :ó−ÌþÖíÓí−ÑLêÖþÐñóÌ−ÔnÔíeîÐLŠíÓLþÔìÔêÐñ
         Similarly wherever the term óeì−Ìò appears in Scripture  êÖþКÌnÔaÓL óeì−Ìò öBLÐññÖköÑ×Ðî
                 it means he reconsidered as to what to do.  :³BNμÔñíÔôCÔñÐôÌò öBLÐñ                  [22] Breath of the spirit of life. 101  .íéÄiÇçÇçeø úÇîÀLÄð [áë]
        [For example:] “No man that He should reconsider.” 350  óÖìÓòгÌ−ÐîóÖðÖêöÓëe                 [Meaning:] a breath of the spirit of life. 102  :ó−ÌiÔìÔìeþ ñÓLíÖôÖLÐò
         “And concerning His servants, may He reconsider.” 351  óÖìÓòгÌ−î−ÖðÖëμñÔ¼Ðî                         Everything on dry land.  .äÈáÈøÈçÆaøÆLÂà
             “God reconsidered doing the terrible things.” 352  íÖ¼ÖþÖíñÔ¼’íóÓìÖpÌiÔî                         But not the fish in the sea. 103  :óÖiÔaÓLó−ÌèÖðêGÐî
                   “I regret that I have made him King.” 353  ,−ÌzÐ×ÔñÐôÌí−Ìk−ÌzÐôÔìÌò                           [23] [It] obliterated.  .çÇîÄiÇå [âë]
                      All these refer to second thoughts.  :óÑí³ÓþÓìÔêíÖëÖLÎìÔô öBLÐñóÖlŠk                        It is in the ñÔ¼ÐõÌiÔî form 104  êeí ñÔ¼ÐõÌiÔî öBLÐñ
                        And He grieved in His heart.  .BaÄììÆàáÅ vÇòÀúÄéÇå                                    and not in the ñÓ¼ÖtÌiÔî form. 105  ,ñÓ¼ÖtÌiÔî öBLÐñ Bò−ÑêÐî
      [Means:]He 354 mournedthedestructionofHishandiwork 355  ,î−ÖðÖ−íÑNμÔôöÔðÐëÖêñÔ¼ñÑaÔêгÌò    This is from the forms [of the verbs:] öÓëÌiÔî ,öÓõÌiÔî  .öÓëÌiÔîöÓõÌiÔî³ÔþÐïÌbÌô êeíÐî
            as [in the verse:] “The King mourned his son.” 356  .BòÐañÔ¼CÓñÓnÔíëԮͼÓò :BôÐk
                                                                                         99  This is not to be translated as fifteen amo¯hs above ground level, for even the highest mountains were covered.
      345 For ó¾í −¾òê—the word ó¾í relating to öîôô¾—devastation.  346 The root óìò has two meaning, 1) regret, 2)  100 Yoma 76a.  101 But, do animals have souls?  102 And should not be translated as “a soul of a living spirit” because
      comfort. The concept of regret cannot apply to God who is all-knowing.  347  Ber. Rab. end of chapter 27. The verse  only man has a soul. (M.) Earlier texts, however, read: ó−−ì ìîþ ñ¾ íô¾ò—“a soul of a living spirit” indicating some
      ±þêë óðêí ³ê í¾¼ −× ’í óìò−î is, therefore, translated thus: “God was glad that He made man of the earth.”  348  Onkelos  form of soul in all living beings. (T.H.)  103  Their way was not corrupted (Sanhedrin 108a, Ber. Rab. 32, 11). Ramban
      corroborates that 뮼³−î refers to man, not to God.  349  óìò being used in the sense of “regret.”  350  Bamidbar 23, 19.  wonders how the fish could survive in the scalding waters.  104  Which is in the ñš conjugation, and the translation,
