                              Flushing Catheter

                                            Do Don’t

                               • Note that non-valved catheters require heparin
                                  flush.
                               • Note that valved catheters need only 0.9% NaCl
                                  flush.
                               • Use 0.9% NaCl and heparin if unsure of the type
of catheter. • Flush catheter without an individual
                                                                 physician order.
                               • Note that Heparin requires a physician order for
                                  the individual patient.
                               • Note that usual heparin concentration is 100
units/ mL, but can be 10—100 units/ mL.
                               • Note that usual infused volume of 0.9% NaCl is
10 mL and heparin is 3-5 mL.
                               • Apply pressure on the syringe plunger and
clamp the catheter simultaneously when 1 mL
remains in the syringe to create positive
                                  pressure before removing syringe.
                                                                                               15
