IMPLEMENTATION OF
PROJECT
Objectives 1. To share knowledge and experience regarding the determination of ga-
haru species as well as the classification method of wood, oil and leaf for
extraction and marketing.
2. To apply expertise related to the effectiveness of essential oil extraction
techniques to produce high quality gaharu essential oils with optimum
operating costs.
3. To improve the skills related to standardization quality of gaharu essential
oils (universal database) and agarwood products based on high technol-
ogy.
Methodology 1. Description of samples
Various species of gaharu were identified and classified according to ce-
rtain methods. There were involvement of agarwood local communities,
planters and entrepreneurs throughout this phase.
2. Description of extraction techniques at Kedaik Agarwood Sdn. Bhd.
Sharing experience on exploring several pre-treatment techniques and
extraction methods that could be effective to improve the extraction yi-
eld of agarwood oil to reduce the operation methods and costs.
3. Validation of essential oils
Sharing knowledge on the method of identifying the quality of gaharu
essential oils and several pre-treatment techniques to maintain the quali-
ty of oils.
4. Marketing, Operation Description and Industry capabilities
The statistical report is shared to see the profitability level for each extra-
ction process from raw material until the product is produced.
5. Industry sharing and announcement
Organize seminars at national and international levels to explain the new
extraction techniques of producing gaharu products to the gaharu trad-
ers and entrepreneurs. 5
Activities Conducted 1. Identification of various species
Jungle expedition and visiting to the gaharu plantations commence from
July to September.
2. Extraction of gaharu essential oil
Determining the optimum parameters in pre-treatment technique and
improving the efficiency of agarwood oil extraction process.
3. Validation of the quality requirements of the essential oils of gaharu.
The process of improving essential oils.
4. Statistical report
Reporting on operating costs, planting costs, extraction and marketing of
products to achieve profit.
5. Knowledge transfer report
"Roadshow" and seminars to communities and gaharu traders.
Output
Industry The project manages to identify 13 compounds that show the high quality of
gaharu essential oil produced from industry.
1. The various pre-treatment technique used, ie the soaking effect (used in
the current industry) affects the production of oil during the extraction
process.
2. Development of pre-treatment technique that gives high extraction yield
and quality extracts and run at low cost, shorter time and therefore, ma-
king the extraction process more efficient than the precedent methods.
3. The use of gaharu leaves as the source of bioactive ingredient, which are
considered as waste. The studied show leaf extracts contain certain bio-
active substances that positively acts as antioxidant.
4. Gaharu industry can be improved with the new of extraction technology
and innovation.
5. Income of gaharu entrepreneurs and traders are enhanced by the cre-
ation of new products.
