EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Agarwood producing tree, best described as a ‘fragrant wood’, normally
goes by the name of ‘karas or gaharu’ in Malaysia. The program aims to
share knowledge and experience in determining gaharu species as well as
the classification methods of wood, oil and leaf for extraction and market-
ing.

The objective of this program is to apply expertise in the effectiveness of the
extraction of essential oils to produce high quality of gaharu oils with
optimum operating costs. Additionally, this program has also improved the
skills associated with the quality of the essential oils (universal database) and
high value gaharu-based products based on the latest technology.

Throughout this program, the approach used is through the determination of
species and quality, the effectiveness of extraction and the validation of the
quality of oils and gaharu-based products. In addition, the program has
provided a description of the technique of determining the quality of
gaharu essential oil as well as sharing in terms of technological use of instru-
mentation related to modern technology, software and handling of
high-tech machines to differentiate the quality of woods, oils and leaves.

The program also explains scientifically the production of essential oils to
industry staff for more understanding of the processes in their respective
work.
