Aquaponic is a food production system that combines aquaculture (raising of fish),
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY with hydroponics (soil-less growing of plants in water) into an integrated system. The
first year of this project included purchasing and building an aquaponic system
consisting of a grow bed, breeding tank, growing tank, and basic scientific equip-
ment to monitor water quality and quality control throughout the system. The project
began with one complete set using flood and drain system. Currently, there are three
tanks systems (2,000 L) fabricated with possible expansion planned in the future. 59
All of the students participating in the project had an opportunity of hands-on on
aquaponic and many of them developed passion about the daily work surrounding
the upkeep of the system. The students observed water spinach as well as tomato
plants growing in this closed-loop environment and they learned about raising fish,
and the importance of temperature control in the fish environment. Lessons about the
systems’ operating principles, troubleshooting and maintenance were also taught.
Currently, tilapia and catfish are being grown using the system. The knowledge
provided by the team leader, Dr. Rama Yusvana from Universiti Malaysia Pahang
motivated the students and inspired them to think about expanding and improving
the aquaponic system. A variety of community members are interested in the project
and wish to learn and apply the technology for their domestic or commercial uses.
Both parents and community members are taking advantage and learning about the
project. More than 200 people have interacted with the research group on the
project at various level.
