Public Higher Learning Institute 1. Improved opportunity to secure more grants from the government by
collaborating with the company such as demand-driven Public Private
Research Network (PPRN).
2. Exposure of the IPTA (UMP) at the International Conference such as 5th
International Green Tech & Eco Products Exhibition & Conferences at the
Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on 16-19 October 2014 (i.e. Oral prese-
ntation).
3. Availability of aquaponic green house for research purposes by final year
students (PSM Project). Knowledge transfer/skills obtained by the students
involved in this project (M.Sc) & final year (PSM) students.
4. Aquaponic green house provides fresh organic produce such as tomat-
es and wheatgrass.
5. Exposure for UMP at the International Conference on Biotechnology
(Agriculture) & Wellness Industry at UTM on 10-11 June 2014 (Oral presen-
tation).
Human Capital Development 1. Ten (10) school students have been intensively involved in
maintenance of school aquaponic system.
2. Two-hundred (200) members of the school community (including students
and teachers) have participated in hands-on training sessions.
3. Two (2) Graduate Interns (M.Sc students) have been trained with knowl
edge and skills in integrated farming system.
4. Fifty-nine (59) Final Year students taking Biomanufacturing Course in
2014-2015 (Semester 1) during the October – November 2014 in Petrosains,
Kuantan.
5. Thirteen (13) PSM students gain in-depth knowledge and skills on the tech
nology as a result of conducting research project with a potential for
publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
PROBLEMS IDENTIFIED
Younger generation has neglected agriculture and agro-based sectors
according to Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman, Deputy Agriculture and
Agro-Based Industry Minister. The lack of interest among the younger genera-
tion was the reason why their participation in the agro industry is low. 61

KNOWLEDGE TRANSFERRED
1. Aquaculture hatchery system and their income potential in agrien-
tre preneurship for community.
2. Hands-on installation of different kinds of aquaponic system for
various different applications (The Nutrient Film Technique, Ebb and
Flow, and Raft system).
3. The theory and basic science behind aquaponic setup (natural vs.
artificial ecosystem, bacterial growth, growing plants without chemi-
cal fertilizer, etc.).
4. Various designs / setup of an aquaponic system such as ‘fill and
drain’ system, materials required, parts or components, etc.
5. Theory on water quality, test and available control system such as
pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, etc.
6. Troubleshooting and maintenance.
7. How to generate income from aquaponic system.
8. Installation of solar-powered aquaponic system.
9. How to minimize algae bloom in aquaponic system.
10. Azolla sp as sustainable feedstock for aquaponic businesses.
