     EXECUTIVE SUMMARY


                                         Particleboard is manufactured by combining wood fibers with a synthetic
                                         thermosetting  resin  such  as  urea-formaldehyde  (UF)  or  phenol-formalde-
                                                                                                                 02
                                         hyde (PF) and hot pressed into various shapes and sizes. In this entire process,   76
                                                                                                                 14
                                         basically, only one foreign component not present in the natural wood is
                                         added that is the synthetic adhesive. The major drawback of formaldehyde
                                         based adhesives is that they release formaldehyde vapours that can cause
                                         cancer.
                                         Most  of  the  developed  countries  have  imposed  restrictions  on  import  of
                                         wood  composite  with  high  formaldehyde  content.  Lignin  is  considered
                                         as  a  potential  substitute  for  formaldehyde-based  adhesives  due  to  its
                                         phenol based composition and huge availability. In the present work, wood
        fibres were treated with Laccase enzyme to improve the fiber surface and to generate an active lignin solution.
        Lignin solution was collected from the wood fibres. The collected solution, called organosolv lignin (OSL), was
        concentrated until the solution reached 3% solid content. The OSL alone or mixed with soy flour can act as a very
        good bioadhesive.
        The newly developed bioadhesive with the optimum conditions will be applied by the industrial collaborator
        (Mieco Chipboard Berhad) as it will help in reducing the cost of adhesive and the wood composite will be more
        ecofriendly and biodegradable.
