4.7 Air traffic service units
Ground stations are divided into 3 categories:
- Flight Control Units
- Flight Advisory Units
- Flight Information Units
4.7.1 Flight control units
Air traffic control units provide air traffic control service in a specified area, e.g.
a control zone (CTR), a terminal area (TMA), a control area (CTA) or an air route
(AIRWAY).
The service is provided by air traffic controllers who, through the issuance of
various instructions and permissions (clearances), promote and regulate air
traffic primarily with the aim of avoiding collisions.
In addition to the air traffic control service, flight information service and
alerting service are also provided.
The different control units that provide air traffic control services are:
- Tower Provides air traffic control service for aerodrome traffic.
Found at all controlled aerodromes.
E.g. Kastrup Tower, Karup Tower
- Ground Provides air traffic control service for traffic on a controlled
apron area
In Denmark: Kastrup Ground.
- Approach Provides air traffic control service for arriving and departing
traffic to one or more airports.
At large airports, the approach is divided into Arrival for
arriving traffic.
For departing traffic, the unit is called Departure.
