4.8 Standard English phraseology
English standard phraseology includes words that are not immediately used in
ordinary English speech. These are technical terms used in aviation. If a
standard phrase exists, this should be used as much as possible.
4.8.1 Standard words and expressions
Below is a glossary of words that you should know the meaning and use of.
Acknowledge Let me know if my message is understood
Affirm Yes
Approved Request approved
Break I indicate separation between different parts of my message
Break Break I advise separation between messages to multiple aircraft
Cancel Cancel ………
Check Check (systems or procedures)
Cleared* Permitted to perform ……
Confirm Have I/you received the message correctly
Contact Establish radio contact with ……
Correct That is correct
Correction I have said something incorrectly, the correct thing is …
Cancel……. Consider clearance/instruction not sent
Disregard Consider message not sent
Go ahead Begin transmission
Go around Performing an “overshoot”
How do you read What is the readability of my transmission
I say again I repeat (to clarify/emphasize)
Monitor Listen to (frequency)
Negative No / permission not given / that is not correct
Over My message is complete, and I do not expect a response (not normal on
VHF??)
Out Exchange completed (not normal on VHF)
Read back Repeat the entire (or specified part of) the message just sent
Recleared Clearance changed to …(the new clearance or part thereof, replaces the
previously sent)
Relay Sending a message for another aircraft
Report Send the following information ……..
Request I would like to know.../ I request…
Roger I have understood the message (may not be used as an acknowledgement
for a message that requires reading back
Say Again Repeat the whole (or specified part of my message)
