Communication
4.14.1 Testing the emergency transmitter
Switch on the aircraft radio and set it to 121.5 MHz (only on the frequency that
we can test). Then activate the emergency transmitter manually and you hear
whether it is ok. It is if you hear the siren sounds emitted.
Position determination with 406MHz is done via satellites and is accurate within
approx. 20 km
The system is called COSPAS/SARSAT and is a collaboration between several
countries.
TESTING OF EMERGENCY TRANSMITTERS:
1. Must be performed within the first 5 minutes of each hour.
2. Must last no longer than 1 second or 3 sweeps.
3. Must be performed on the ground
4.14.2 Requirements for listening watch
When flying over the North Sea and Skagerak within Copenhagen FIR and when
flying in Sonderstrom FIR, continuous listening watch must be maintained on
the VHF emergency frequency 121.5 MHz
However, this is excepted during periods when speaking on other frequencies
or work in the cabin does not allow listening on two frequencies at the same
time.
If you hear an ELT signal (piijjooouuuu- piijjooouuuu….. 4 x 2 times), you must,
if you judge that it is not a short test, notify the nearest aeronautical station,
stating:
- Position, altitude and route
- Time of reception of the first signals
- Information about the strength of the signal.
