Operational procedures

6.10.2 Communication to the pilot regarding runway condition

Information about runway conditions can be received by the pilot in several

                ways.

                6.10.2.1 NOTAM / SNOWTAM

NOTAM is a general term for all aviation-related messages, covering both safety

                and operational matters.

SNOWTAM (Snow and Ice Report) is a specific type of NOTAM that focuses on

informing about snow, ice, and winter conditions that may affect flight safety

                on or near airports.

                SNOWTAM reports contain information about:

                   - The amount of snow or ice on runways and taxiways

                   - Conditions such as fresh snow, freezing rain, or snowplow operations

                   - Weather conditions that could affect flight safety, such as slippery

runways or reduced visibility due to snow or fog

                    - Information about areas of the airport that may be obstructed by winter
                       conditions

The maximum validity of a SNOWTAM is 8 hours. After this, it is assumed, unless

a new SNOWTAM has been issued, that the runway condition is DRY.

At airports with limited service hours, this may not always be the case, so

                caution is needed.

                6.10.2.2 ATIS

When arriving at an airport, you can listen to

ATIS, which is an automatic broadcast of

information to arriving and departing flights.

Here, the Runway Condition Code is given as 3

                digits.
