Aircraft general knowledge
The transponder is used for the purpose of the air traffic service ensuring that
aircraft do not collide with each other.
Once a code has been set, the aircraft can be seen on the radars, and this allows
us to get help from the air traffic service if we get into trouble during the flight.
One of the functions that can be selected is the Flight Time function, which tells
the current flight's flight time so far
8.12.11.5 ADF, KING KR 86
Under the Transponder is an ADF (Automatic Direction Finder) KING KR 86.
We don't use this ADF much
anymore.
The radio beacons are being
discontinued, and when we
have GPS equipment, it is rare that we have this fine device in use.
8.12.11.6 DME KING KN 64
Under KING KR 86 we have a DME KING KN 64.
We also use this to a very limited extent. But we use it when we fly to Aalborg
on navigation tour lesson 19.
DME shows us the distance to the DME radio beacon, and when it has the same
position as the VOR, we have both direction and distance.
