Scientifically complex
Paradoxically, the science surrounding the
crisis must be extremely complex and
impenetrable to the ordinary person. This
is essential, as otherwise people would be
able to make reasoned decision on what is
right and what is wrong. So, the science
surrounding the disposal of the Brent Spar
was very complex – how many pollutants
were on the spar and how much damage
would they do? Would the structure, as it
sunk to the bottom of the North Atlantic,
provide a heaven for the sea creates
there? Or would it damage the ecology of
the ocean floor?
