Figure 4.24 Infectious laryngotracheitis virus (herpesvirus) replicates and produces cytopathic effects on
monolayer of leghorn male hepatoma (LMH) cells. The cells were captured under inverted microscope
two days following the infection. The infected (a) and uninfected cells (b) are shown. Photo: M. Sarjoon

Figure 4.25 (a) Egg incubator is an essential component of a virology laboratory. For virus isolation
and for egg inoculation for detecting lesions in 9–11 days old embryos SPF eggs are necessary. (b)
Pock lesions on the CAM of embryonated chicken egg two days of inoculation. Nine to twelve days
old embryonated chicken eggs are inoculated with the test inoculum prepared from tracheal swabs.
The shell over the broader end of the egg has been removed to visualize the CAM. (c) The embryo on
the left is the uninfected control. The embryo on the right, inoculated with infectious bronchitis virus
shows stunting and curling. Photos: Dr Davor Ojkic, Animal Health Laboratory, University of Guelph, the
Netherlands.
