TEACHER INTERNS
INDIA WINTERIM 2016 – 2017
The India Winterim Program is an intensive, three week, field-based program that
provides the teams from the University of Iowa, USA, the opportunity to spend time
interacting and learning from a few very interesting social entrepreneurs, non-profit
organizations and various diverse academic institutions. This program aims to give the
teams an insight to learn and develop cross cultural solutions to real-world problems.
The two groups of students from the University of Iowa came to Bangalore to experience
the following:
Team 09: Observational Learning in Educational Settings in India with collaboration with
Delhi Public School Bangalore North
Team 10: To study Nonprofit Organizational Effectiveness: Youth, Nutrition and Foods of
India in collaboration with Akshaya Patra Foundation and Slurp Cooking Studio.
Day 1: The program began at 12 noon on the 29 of December 2016, with a traditional

welcome – with tika, garland, jasmine flowers and Indian sweets.
Day 2: Team 09 on 30 of January visited Spastic Society of Karnataka outreach
th
program opposite NIMHANS, and then Bubbles – Organization for Children with Autism.
Day 3: On 31 of January 2016, the team was introduced to Indian Culture and heritage.

Both team 09 and team 10 spent the New Years Eve at Olde Bangalore.
Day 4: 2 of January 2017, started with a panel discussion in DPSBN on the topic –

“Special Education Scenario in India”. The team then headed to the outreach
program of Spastic Society in Ramnagar.
Day 5: 3 of January2017, started with a visit to Kendriya Vidyalaya, Rail wheel Factory,

Bangalore and the team visited Parikrama Learning Centre.
Day 6: 4 of January 2017, started with the team enjoying a session of Yoga by

Mrs. Prema, Yoga Teacher, DPSBN. Followed by visit to Vidya Shilp Academy and State
Government School in Hunsmaranahalli. Followed by a session by Mr.Divyanshu
Ganatra, Blind Psychologist, Paraglider & Advocate For Disability Rights and Founder,
Adventures beyond Barriers, and Ms.Shalini Saraswathi, Blade Runner and Quadruple
Amputee, where they spoke about the various challenges they have overcome in spite of
being termed – “Disabled”.
Day 7: 5 of January 2017, the team went to Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) where

the team had a phenomenal experience of an assembly conducted by the students of JNV
theme being America. After breakfast the team from UOI went to F.A.M.E India.
Day 8: 6 January 2017, The team 09 headed to visit Spastic Society of Karnataka

(SSK), Bangalore. The team had an opportunity to interact with Mrs. Rukmini
Krishnaswamy, Director, SSK. Following the interaction, the team was taken around to
see the facilities offered at SSK
Day 9: 7 of January 2017, DPSBN organized a panel discussion on “The past, present

and Future of Education in India” followed by a Q & A session. Post this session the team
visited DART - Dystrophy Annihilation Research Trust, founded by Mr.Anand and
Mrs.Movin Anand for their son Karan Anand, a 10 grade student of DPSBN. Post DART

the team visited Ramaiah Institute.
Day 10: 8 of January 2017, was a day where the team experienced the real Bangalore
th
and broke all the myths they had come with. On this day both team 09 and team 10 were
accompanied by Mrs. Shazia Maqsood, Master Chef, Slurp Cooking Studio & Member
Board of Management, .
