2-4-9 Six Sigma
Six sigma is a popular management philosophy that is
sweeping the globe. Its goal is to make an organization more
effective and efficient. Effectiveness is the degree to which an
organization meets and exceeds the needs and requirements of
its customers. Efficiency is the resources consumed in
achieving effectiveness.
A highly disciplined approach used to reduce the process
variations to the extent that the level of defects are drastically
reduced to less than 3.4 per million process, product or service
opportunities . The approach relies heavily on advanced
statistical tools. Sigma (σ) is Greek letter that is used to
describe variability. In statistical quality control, this means
"standard deviation" .
In business terms six sigma can be defined as "a business
improvement strategy used to improve business profitability,
drive out waste, reduce costs of poor quality and to improve the
effectiveness and efficiency of all operations so as to meet or
even exceed customer' needs and expectations".
